Meeting our responsibility to the planet
Daikin recognises it has a major social responsibility to the natural environment.
Daikin’s leading environmental technologies of heat pumps, inverters and refrigerants provide solutions in the crucial shift towards carbon neutrality. We are constantly developing and improving our products to be part of the climate solution.
Daikin is on a journey to create a cleaner, greener environment for all. Our aim is to achieve net zero by 2050, in order to benefit the generations to come.
We recognise that we are taking the first steps along this path, and we have a long road to travel. However, we are determined to move as quickly as possible towards the destination of net zero.

Managing Director's message
“At Daikin, the future of the world's air is our greatest concern. We use the knowledge, innovation and technologies, dedicated to air, cultivated over many years, to improve the quality of air we breathe and the quality of lives we live. This is our mission.”
Hiroyasu Ishikawa, Managing Director at Daikin UK
Our challenge
Humanity is facing its greatest ever challenge: climate change has become a global emergency.
Human activity has already caused global temperatures to rise by more than 1°C from pre-industrial levels, and if we continue with ‘business as usual’, we would risk catastrophic crop failures, famine and flooding affecting 80% of people across the world.
Currently, the expected rate of warming is 3°C by the end of the century. But we need to reduce that figure to below 1.5°C if we want to mitigate the most serious risks to people and the planet.
To achieve this target, the UK Government has committed to achieving Net Zero Greenhouse Gases by 2050.
And the energy, construction and HVAC industries have a huge role to play. We must quadruple the UK’s supply of low-carbon electricity. Improve building efficiencies to significantly higher standards, delivering crucial energy savings and reducing emissions. And transition to low-carbon heating solutions. We must also move away from F-gases.
The UK has committed to reducing F-gas emissions by 68% between 2015 and 2030. And at Daikin, we’re committed to playing our part – and helping you play yours, too.
Because we’re more than just an equipment supplier or maintenance provider: we’re defining the HVAC industry of tomorrow – one that’s fit for a low-carbon future.
Our Commitment
We take our responsibility to the planet seriously. As a leading manufacturer of air conditioners, we are committed to making an active difference to the world we live in.
Air conditioners have become vital to people's lives around the globe. However, the energy they consume creates CO2 emissions if they are not using renewable generation sources. The refrigerant used to run the systems can also add to their carbon footprint. We fully recognise our accountability for this environmental impact. And we’re proactively working to lead the way for change in our industry.
Daikin is making major advances to reduce carbon emissions in our technology and our operations. We are taking the first steps along our journey towards the destination of net zero. This is our top priority and our prime focus. And we are determined to play our part in creating a cleaner, greener world.
Our Journey to net zero by 2050
The world has made a sharp and accelerated turn toward carbon neutrality. The Daikin Group has seized this opportunity to establish our own "Challenge to achieve carbon neutrality". This mission aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
We have set a target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of our products by 50% or more in 2030. And we will continue forward on that journey to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
With efforts to achieve a decarbonised society being rolled out across the globe, it is our top priority to speed up our initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire lifecycle.
Here are some of the key steps we are taking along that journey…
1. Leading the heat-pump revolution
Daikin is fully behind the decarbonisation of the heating market. We’re investing heavily to promote the transition from combustion heating to heat pumps that use heat in the air. To put it simply, heat pumps are the future of heating.
Our heat pump technology is already changing the face of home heating. We have already installed over 1 million heat pumps across Europe, helping homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint. Daikin’s ground-breaking range of heat pumps provides people with viable green alternatives to the traditional fossil-fuelled boiler.
2. Carbon neutral at every step
Daikin aims to achieve a carbon-neutral society across the entire value chain. This covers not only product development and production, but also the impact of our product use. And also what happens to our systems at the end of life.
Demand for air conditioning is expected to carry on growing around the world. And that means we need to continue to explore ways to reduce the environmental impact of air conditioners, from start to finish.
3. Reducing electricity consumption
Alongside minimising CO2 emissions from our business operations, we’re focusing on reducing electricity consumption during usage.
Air conditioners with inverters consume 50% less electricity than ones without inverters. For this reason, Daikin has focused on the development of inverter technologies to shift the market towards this lower energy consuming technology. We’re making it our mission to lead the industry towards a greener future.
4. Pioneering improved refrigerants
We’re working hard to mitigate the impact of refrigerants. Daikin has identified that R-32, which has approximately one-third the global warming potential of conventional refrigerants, is the right choice for air conditioners. For this reason, we’re promoting the spread of R-32 worldwide, offering free access to our patents.
At the same time, we’ve created a recovery and reclamation cycle for used refrigerants. This recycling initiative means we can significantly minimise the impact of refrigerants currently in use.
Our Initiatives
Daikin has put several sustainability initiatives in place to ensure we are doing the very best we can, on every single step of our journey.
Starting with manufacture
Embodied Carbon
We are actively assessing and reducing all sources of embodied carbon throughout the construction lifecycle, starting with raw materials and manufacturing.
During operations
Planet Mark
We have commissioned Planet Mark to measure our carbon and social data to ensure we have full knowledge of the impact of our operations.
Throughout the supply chain
Net Zero Partner Scheme
Daikin is striving to ensure that all our partners are as committed to our mission to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Within our product offering…
Continuing to end of life…
And our social impact…
Forests for the Air
This project seeks to conserve forests covering some 11 million hectares in seven locations around the world.
